MON 28 SEPT. PRACTICE GROUND, GLEN DAVIS NSW
11.40am.
Lithgow.
Curry beef pies, our favourite.
12.50pm.
The turn after Capertee, towards Glen Davis.
The valley opens slowly, then all at once.
Trees first, then hills,
then sandstone cliffs on both sides,
gone orange in the afternoon.
We stop talking for a while.

1.35pm.
The end of the road.
Glimpses of a timber house up on the slope,
sitting in the middle of the mountain.
Cattle with their heads down. Kangaroos. Wallabies.
It takes our breath away a little.

1.45pm.
At the top of the driveway, an old red brick fireplace,
all that's left of the house that stood here before.
A tiny ceramic ladybug sitting on it.
We leave it where it is.

2.00pm.
Inside.
Windows on both sides,
and the valley comes in through every one of them.
Two ARC FOLD sconces on the bedroom wall.
Our lamp on a bench in the living room,
beside an old Japanese vest and a few books.
Strange, and lovely,
to walk into someone else's home
and find something you made already living in it.

2.10pm.
The same salt and pepper shakers we have at home.
Japanese wicker blinds you unroll by hand.
Of everything in the house, they feel the most sympathetic.
2.20pm.
We unpack BLOOM, brought up for the day.
The lamp on the kitchen bench,
the valley behind it,
right where the toaster usually lives.
A pair of BLOOM sconces either side of the bed in the second room,
light running up the wall, and down.

3.15pm.
Lunch. Sandwiches
and fried rice from home.
A mother wallaby and her joey
come up to graze in front of the house.
We take a few photos, slowly.
Then we just watch.

5.15pm.
The light starts to go.
Lamps on, one by one.
The timber turns from pale, to honey, to amber,
the way a room does when someone is home.

5.40pm.
Walking the property,
a wall of rock with moss blooming all over it.
Moss was one of the first ideas behind BLOOM.
We set the lamp down on it.
A lamp made for a bedside,
out on a rock in the last of the day.

6.00pm.
Dark comes quickly out here.
Wombats and wallabies on the road.
We pack up and go.
The house behind us, lit from the inside.
Headlights on the dirt road.
Classical music the whole way home.
November, we'll come back to stay.
